GREVILLE ARMS SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP HURLING FINAL:
The final of the Greville Arms Senior Hurling Championship took place last Sunday in Cusack Park Mullingar on a sunny, Cold but dry afternoon last years champions Clonkill were dethroned by a sharper hungrier Raharney side. It was the first meeting between these sides in a county final and expectations were high on both sides but the match failed to deliver anything spectacular.
The game started at a fast pace and with ten minutes gone the sides were level at 1-01 to 0-04 and following an error in the Raharney defence Clonkill scrambled the ball to the Raharney net and one thought they might take control but not so. Raharney to their credit kept battling and at the interval the match was all square 0-07 to 2-01.
The second half wasn't played at as lively a pace as the first and didn't really get going until the last tem minutes. Clonkill were guilty of missing some scoring chances which Raharney capitalised on and with five minutes to go the game was level. Raharney finished the stronger of the two sides and when Brendan Mc Keogh floated over a brilliant point and set up a second it looked like the cup was heading towards the Deel. The final minutes were nerve racking as Clonkill had chances all be they from long range frees but it wasn't to be and Raharney lifted the Westmeath Examiner Cup for 2008 on a score line of 0-15 to 2-06.
SHAY MURTAGH SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP FOOTBALL:
On Saturday evening last, the semi-final replay between holders Tyrrellspass and Castledaly took place in Athlone, Castledaly while unlucky in the drawn game made no mistake this week an made it an all south final for 2008. The game was played at a good pace despite the poor conditions and both sides got it hard to find the target. Castledaly got the better of the early exchanges and with eight minutes gone led by 1-01 to 0-01. Tyrrelspass were then dealt a cruel blow when corner forward David Glennon had to retire through injury and try as they might the failed to get the better of the Castledaly defence who led at the break 1-03 to 0-04.
The second half was a much closer affair with Tyrrellspass outscoring the winners but they badly needed a goal to lift their game, but it was Castledaly who ratteled the net for a second time through Tommy Warburton. Denis Glennon kicked two fine points for Tyrrellspass but it wasn't to be their day with Castledaly progressing to this year's final, the final score was 2-04 to 0-09
SHAY MURTAGH SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP FOOTBALL:
Next weekend in Cusack Park Mullingar the Final of the 2008 Shay Murtagh Senior Football Championship takes place between near neighbours Garrycastle and Castledaly. It is an all south affair and will be a closely contested affair, with a proud tradition of football in both clubs. Castledaly while only having one week's break before the final, will have benefited greatly from their tough semi final replay, and will be expecting big performances from M.J Mc Loughlin, Michael Duffy, and Tommy Warburton if they want to lift the Title. Likewise Garrycastle will need good performances from The Dolan bros, Paddy Mulvihill, and Justin Mc Ateer if they are to have aspirations of lifting the title. It's hard to say who the favourites will be as both sides came through the qtr finals and both sides defeated the Div 1 and Div 2 table toppers and don't be surprised if this one goes down to the wire.
