Westmeath SHC final: Raharney dethrone holders

October 06, 2008
Raharney caused a major upset in the Westmeath SHC final at Cusack Park when they defeated holders and reigning All-Ireland intermediate champions Clonkill to regain the Examiner Cup after a one-year lapse. Raharney...0-15 Clonkill...2-6 The Deelsiders recovered from the concession of two soft goals in the first half to run out deserving winners. Andrew Mitchell and full forward Larry Donoghue both found the net to give Clonkill a 2-3 to 0-7 lead at the interval. But their much-vaunted attack, which featured county star Brendan Murtagh, was brilliantly held by the Raharney defence in the second half, being restricted to just three points and only one from play. With John Shaw, Brian Connaughton and Brian Smyth in top scoring form, the underdogs eventually took the lead in the 17th minute through a point from veteran Brendan McKeogh, and they held on to bring the title back to the Meath-border parish for the 10th time.
