GREVILLE ARMS SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP HURLING FINAL: Next weekend in Cusack Park Mullingar the Final of the 2008 senior Hurling Championship takes place between near neighbours Raharney and current titleholders Clonkill. This will be the first final meeting between these two hurling powers and has every chance of being a lively affair, with both clubs steeped in the tradition. Raharney while only having one week's break before the final, will have benefited greatly from their tough semi final replay, and will be expecting big performances from John Shaw, Conor Jordan, Brian Connaughton, and Brian Smyth if they are to wrestle the crown from Clonkill. Likewise Clonkill will need good performances from Adam Price, Andrew Mitchell, Paddy Dowdall, and Brendan Murtagh if they are to hold onto the title. Clonkill will probably be installed as favourites and rightly so as they have not lost a match in this years championship but don't be surprised if this one goes down to the wire. GREVILLE ARMS SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP HURLING: On Saturday evening last, the semi-final replay between Raharney and St. Oliver Plunketts in Cusack pk. This game started at a very fast pace and within ten minutes Plunketts led by four points and were playing better hurling, but this was soon to change with Raharney coming more into the game with some fine score from John Shaw and Brian Smyth brought them back on level terms. Plunketts continued to hurl with passion but were making hard work of getting scores while at the other end the score came easier for Raharney and but for the fact that Peter Collins made some excellent saves this game could have been over much earlier. Sean O' Leary hurled well for plunketts throughtout and was well assisted by Noel Gavin, Dermot Curley and in Goals Peter Collins. Raharney had fine performances by John Shaw Brian Smyth and Francis Boyle and march on to the final to face Clonkill. SHAY MURTAGH SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP FOOTBALL: The Semi-finals of the 2008 Championship took place last weekend in Cusack Park with Garrycastle taking on St. Lomans and Tyrellspass facing up to near neighbours Castledaly. In the first of the two matches St Lomans faced up to Garrycastle. This was a good lively game of football with some fine scores taken on both sides and quite a few cards issued by the referee. St. Lomans played the better football for the first twenty minutes of the match largely spurned on by an early goal, which was somehow scrambled over the line. Garrycastle came more into the game and by half time the sides were level 2-02 to 0-08, from the restart Garrycastle stamped their authority on this game and never look like loosing as it all seemed to go wrong for Lomans, and clean possession they were getting in the first half was now being won on the break by Garrycastle. Garry Castle won out on a final scoreline of 1-15 to 2-07. The second semi-final between Tyrrellspass and neighbours Castledaly was to say the least a tough encounter with nothing being given away lightly by either sides. Tyrrellspass started the brighter and with sixteen minutes gone were 1-04 to 0-02 up and looked to be coasting, but for some unknown reason the wheels seemed to come off the wagon and with would be all of twenty three minutes before they would score again, during which time Castledaly had not only drawn level but had taken the lead. Denis Glennon came more into the game for Tyrrellspass and all of the play appeared to be channelled through him and with his fantastic turn of pace and good delivery of the ball this game was once again turning. As the game entered into time added on and the sides level it looked like a draw was on the cards, but Castledaly surely thought they must have won when they floated over a wonderful point and Denis Glennon was wide at the other end from a scoreable position to tie the match. In a final twist to this hard fought encounter David Glennon pounced on a knocked down ball from a poor Martin Flanagan free and knocked it over the bar to force a replay on a final score of Tyrrellspass 2-08 Castledaly 0-14.
