Shels coast to U21 title

Shelmaliers 3-11 Sliabh Bhui Gaels 1-9 A pair of second-half goals helped Shelmaliers record an eight-point victory over Sliabh Bhui Gaels last Monday in the Premier Under 21 hurling championship final. Played out at St Patrick's Park, the two sides were even during the opening half, with the Gaels netting the first goal after ten minutes when centre-forward Gary Doran raced through the Shels defence and blasted to the roof of the net. Shels responded like the champions that they are by almost immediately finding the net when Brian Doyle cut through and finished nicely and a point from Brendan Barron afterwards helped them into a 1-5 to 1-4 lead at the break. Joe Kelly and Shane Tomkins swapped point after the restart, but when Brian Tobin lobbed Muiris Ruth in the Gaels goal the signs began to look more ominous for the trailing team. Shels had defender Conor Walsh sent off in the final quarter, but it made little difference as Ronan Kavanagh assured the title with eight minutes to go when latching on to a long ball from Conor Byrne and blasting to the net.
