John Heslin on duty for St Loman's

St Loman’s secured back-to-back Westmeath senior football championship titles earlier today after finally edging past Garrycastle at TEG Cusack Park.

It took extra time to decide this final replay in Mullingar and, when they needed it most, Shane Dempsey and John Heslin came up trumps in capturing St Loman’s a 1-16 to 1-12 victory.

Having snatched a late draw the last day, the winners here had a shaky start that saw Alex Gardiner hitting their net on the quarter hour mark.

Garrycastle failed to kick on in the run up to half-time however and points at the other end from Westmeath star Heslin would see St Loman’s into a 0-7 to 1-2 lead come the interval.

TJ Cox’s goal looked to have the victors coasting early in the restart but Garrycastle rallied with Gardiner to the fore and goalkeeper Sean Brennan’s ‘45’ would have the sides level at 1-10 apiece come the full-time whistle.

Dempsey and Heslin swung the momentum back in St Loman’s favour early in extra time and there’d be no coming back from Gary Dolan’s charges once the Mullingar men pulled four clear.
