Garrycastle 3-12  Caulry 2-12

The  under 15 boys pulled off a great win over Caulry in the rescheduled division 2 championship final played in Athlone in front of a fine crowd. This was a smashing game of football played in a great spirit by both teams. This young Garrycastle team came into the game as underdogs, having lost to Caulry in an earlier round.  They started nervously but played their way into the game and led early on. However Caulry had a purple patch midway through  the half and saw them take the lead. But a determined Garrycastle regained the initiative  and led by a point at halftime, 2-6 to 1-8, the goals coming from Andrew Henson and Niadh Shine.   The early stages of the second half saw Garrycastle increase their lead to 4 points when Andrew Henson cut through the Caulry defence to find the net for the second time. The 7 point lead didn't last as Caulry fought back and with the help of a goal reduced the lead to 3. However Garrycastle controlled possession and after a number of misses increased the lead to 4,  a brilliant free off the ground from 45 metres by Niadh Shine.  Another Caulry  point brought it back to a one score game but in spite of constant Garrycastle pressure they failed to make the game secure but the final whistle arrived bringing great celebration by the large Garrycastle crowd present . This was  a well deserved win by a team who have made tremendous improvement during the season and showed a great hunger for victory.  Their handling, kicking, support play, tackling and ability to find each other was of a high standard. Well done by players and management.

Following the game Minor Board secretary  Kevin Jordan presented the cup to Garrycastle captain, Anthony  Mannion.

Garrycastle 1-13  St Lomans 2-11

Round 4 of the championship ended in another one point defeat which leaves us needing to beat Coralstown Kinnegad in Round 5 to retain an interest in the competition.  . A lively start saw our boys going into a 4 point lead, 1-2 to  0-1,  after 5 minutes with the help of a Jason Nugent goal. The tide turned quickly with Lomans leading by 1-5 to 1-3 at the water break. Lomans added 4 points before Garrycastle s next score in the 28th minute. The difference were that Lomans were scoring on most of their attacks while Garrycastle walked into trouble  time and again around the half forward line trying to  play the ball through. The score at halftime  was 1-10 to 1-5 for Lomans. A red card to a Lomans player at halftime  reduced them to 14 in the second half. The first score of the second half was a Lomans point followed by 2 for Garrycastle who were having plenty of possession but were finding it hard to create and take scoring chances. Then disaster struck when on a counter attack the Lomans

midfielder ran through for a goal to leave 7 points between  the sides with the 4th quarter to come. Scores began to come more easily for Garrycastle and 6 on the trot followed but time ran out and the final whistle came as a big relief to Lomans and frustration for our lads. Supporters went away disappointed after a 2nd one point defeat in a row but still hopeful that qualification for the knockout stages can be achieved.

GARRYCASTLE 1-15   Mullingar Shamrocks  1-8

The juniors continued their good form making it 3 wins out of 4 matches. Mullingar Shamrocks had a goal and a point on the scoreboard before a Ger Heneghan free got Garrycastle off the mark after 5 minutes. The goal was the difference between the sides at half time, in a half where Garrycastle were always chasing the game and struggled to get scores. The second half saw improvement with 3 dead balls converted by Ger Heneghan, 2 frees and a 45 to level the match. Further points came from John O'Shea-Sharkey and Kenny Dolan but Shamrocks led by  a point going into the last quarter. The game turned in Garrycastle's favour with the substitutes having an impact and seeing Garrycastle take the lead with a fine move finished to the net by Kenny Dolan. It was a lead that was added to while holding Shamrocks scoreless in the last quarter as the team in green and red ran out comfortable winners.
