IFC v St Mary’s

Our intermediate status will be on the line when we face Multyfarnham in our final Writech IFC Section B game on the weekend after next.

That’s after we slipped to our third defeat against St Mary’s, Rochfortbridge in Ballinagore last Sunday morning. Trailing by just a point at half-time, we lost our way somewhat in the second half and ended up losing on a 2-15 to 3-5 scoreline. The result leaves us facing a straight shootout with Multy to decide who makes the drop to junior next year.

A draw would suffice as we have one point more, but the objective will be to secure that elusive win and end the campaign on a high.

In what was a very open contest, St Mary’s ability to score freely from play was the big difference. They posted 2-14 from play compared to our 2-1. Indeed, we had to wait until 10 minutes from the end for our only point from play by Nigel Scally.

After conceding a point straight from the throw-in, we immediately hit back with a stunning individual goal from wing back James Hanlon after he had picked up possession in midfield from a Danny Scully cross-field pass. Our lead didn’t last for long, however, as in their next attack, St Mary’s scored a goal of their own through Ned Cully, who was a thorn in our side throughout.

The ‘Bridge opened up a 1-3 to 1-0 lead before Scully flicked Darragh Coffey’s beautifully flighted delivery to the corner of the net to bring us level after 10 minutes. St Mary’s grabbed the next two points to lead by 1-5 to 2-0 at the first water break and extended their advantage after the restart before Nigel Scally raised our third green flag from a 22nd minute penalty to restore parity once again.

But once more, St Mary’s replied with a brace of points before Scally’s second free left the minimum in it at half-time, 3-2 to 1-9.

St Mary’s resumed with two more points, but were then let off the hook when Scally missed four frees – all of which were from difficult angles – in quick succession. The winners lifted the siege with two more points to go into the second water break with a five-point lead – 1-13 to 3-2 – they scarcely deserved.

But they outscored us by 1-2 to 0-3 in the final quarter to take the win and leave us in a relegation dogfight.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish Shaun Pidgeon a speedy recovery from an injury which ended his involvement after just seven minutes. Hope to see you back the next day, Shaunie!
