U13 Boys Division 1 Final

Last Wednesday evening the U13 boys were out in Killucan GAA pitch in the division 1 final playing The Downs. A wet and dull evening certainly had no effect on expectations from both clubs as all in attendance were ready for a cracker of a match and these young U13 men from The Downs and Shandonagh certainly gave us one. Both teams met before in an earlier round of this competition with Shandonagh just coming away with the victory then.
A stronger start from Shandonagh saw them rattle the back of the Downs net twice and they followed this with some well taken points. Credit to The Downs young men as they took this in their stride and settled into their own playing pattern matching Shandonaghs endeavours. End to end football was served up with both teams exchanging scores. The second quarter saw the Downs finish the half stronger but Shandonagh managed to hang onto a two point lead.

Half time score Shandonagh 3:08, The Downs 3:06

The second half was an intense battle with great displays of skill and bravery. For an U13 match the scores got from long range out of the hands, from 45s off the ground, from sweeping moves and runs by forwards was a joy to watch. Both sets of backs gave little away but the wet and slippy conditions were very trying at times. With both teams playing sweepers the scores that were got on both sides were hard earned making for a very tense match. The Downs slowly got a grip on the game and took the lead in the fourth quarter. With 60 minutes gone Shandonagh were a point behind and it was hard to see The Downs relinquishing the lead at that stage. What followed in injury time was nothing short of spectacular. Shandonagh refused to bow their heads and came up the field in a fast flowing move that eventually resulted in young Stephen McWade receiving the ball and he duly blasted it into the back of the net. The energy in the grounds at that moment would have powered Mullingar for at least six months if it was tapped. The Downs men again mounted a powerful attack down the field and some nervous moments followed but the Shandonagh defence managed to break up the attack and the Shan forwards tacked on the last point of the game.

Full time score Shandonagh 7:12, The Downs 6:12

This was an absolute cracker of a game and both teams deserve enormous praise for the way they played. Commiserations to the Downs U13 team and we look forward to many more of these fantastic battles in the future. Congratulations to the Shandonagh U13 boys team and coaches on a tremendous win.
