SFC

Garrycastle 0-13  The Downs  2-8

Our seniors left two championship  points slip though their fingers in Kinnegad  on Friday evening last when a long free was pointed by the Downs goalie in the 7th minute of injury time.  The first half started at a frantic pace with a lively hungry  Downs team making life uncomfortable for our boys. The crucial scores were two Downs goals coming in the 12th and 21st minutes.  The first was well taken but came after a mistake in the Garrycastle defence. The second was a scramble in the square when a ball, which should have been cleared,  deflected into the net. The score at halftime  was 2-5 to 0-6 for the Downs.

From the  start of the second half Garrycastle looked like a team on a mission, scoring two quick points but a misplaced pass and an overcarry allowed the Downs regain a 5 point lead. From the 40th minute Garrycastle laid siege to the Downs goal but found scores hard to come by.  A great goal chance flashed outside the  post, a penalty was shot wide and there were a number of scorable point chances missed. But the lead was gradually whittled down until Michael Monaghan  kicked the equaliser well into injury time. The expected final whistle didn't come and the Downs won a rare kick out and worked the ball up the field when the referee blew for a free, which was converted by the goalie. While there were mistakes made the players couldn't be faulted for lack of effort. They showed great heart, put in a huge effort and did everything  except take enough of the chances that came their way.

JFC

Garrycastle 3-12   The Downs  3-8

The juniors had a comprehensive win over the Downs on Sunday evening last in Garrycastle. The win was more comprehensive  than the scoreline suggests as the Downs' three goals came in the final minutes of the game. The home team looked well the better team all through except til those final shaky few minutes. Goals in the first half from Mickey Greene and Conor Duignan helped Garrycastle to a halftime  lead of 2-6 to 0-5. Ciaran ONeill added a 3rd in the 40th minute and with Ger Heneghan scoring points freely the lead was 3 -11 to 0-8. With the hard work done Garrycastle laid back and allowed The Downs back into the game. But it was too late to change the outcome.

Team: Shane Moran, John Sharkey, Fergal McKiernan, Sean Carey,   Gary Mullery, Anthony Larkin, Cathal Redmond, John OBrien, Conor McKiernan,  Enda Keena ,Ciaran O'Neill (1-2), Conor Duignan (1-0),  Kenny Dolan (0-1), Ger Henaghan (0-8), Mickey Greene (1-0). Subs: Philip Monaghan, Adam Keena, Sean Doak (0-1) ,  Cillian Lyons, Unity, Tommy Stephens.

The under15s play Caulry  on Friday next in Athlone at 6.30pm in the final of the Division championship. The two teams met in an earlier round which was edged by Caulry but no doubt the Garrycastle management will be hoping to reverse this result. Come out on Friday  evening and support the lads.

Congratulations

Congratulations  to Westmeath ladies team and management and especially to the Garrycastle girls on the team and panel on winning the Intermediate  All Ireland on Sunday last and also putting in a tremendous  performance doing so. It was a proud day for Westmeath.  Well done all.

Newly Weds
