Frank Young Memorial Tournament, Southern Gaels v Fr. Dalton’s Sat 4th Sept

Southern Gaels U11s played Fr. Dalton’s in the annual Frank Young Tournament at a warm and sunny Páirc Chiaráin, Athlone last Saturday. The hosts started the game brightly with an excellent point by Aodhán Fallon. The Gaels dominated the opening period and were unlucky with several long-range efforts which went narrowly wide but still led at the first water break by three points to one.  Points from Aodhán and Daniel Crosbie adding to their total. A blow to Southern Gaels were the injuries to Cillian Coughlan and Adam O’Brien both of whom had to be replaced. In the second period Dalton’s took their opportunities and scored three well taken goals. Gaels replied with points by Senan Kelly and Shane Cahill but Dalton’s responded with a few more points. In the final period Kevin Vargovcik scored two excellent goals for the Gaels but Dalton’s kept their scores ticking over and the hosts couldn’t close the gap.

Following the game Martin Geary, Southern Gaels Chairperson, thanked both teams for an excellent display of hurling, the coaches for training the teams during the year and the Young Family for sponsoring the tournament. Emily Young presented the Cup to Fr.Dalton’s and the Plate to Southern Gaels captain Sam Meegan. Both teams received medals to celebrate the occasion.

Thanks to Fr.Dalton’s for making the trip to Athlone, to the parents for supporting both teams and to everybody who helped to make it a success.
