Crookedwood GAA Notes

Hurling League Division 1A

Crookedwood 1-20 Brownstown 3-10. Our first game in the league proved to be a fruitful one as we took two points from this fiercely contested game in Archerstown. On a lovely evening for hurling, the crowd of loyal supporters from both sides were treated to a good game. The home team opened the scoring with a pointed free, but we levelled matters within minutes with a similar score. Brownstown hit a purple patch, scoring 1-3 without reply, before two pointed frees from Barry O’Mara sandwiched a fine point from Shane McGovern to keep us in touch. We traded points to hit the water break a goal behind, 1-5 to 0-5. A lull in scoring ensued after the water break, but Brownstown struck next with another pointed free. A point apiece from play (Barry & Noel Yourell) narrowed the gap to two before Brownstown pointed a free and then Barry hit an identical score. Just as the first half entered injury time, our opponents finished the half with a goal to leave them five to the good at half time. With the wind at our backs for the second half we set about reducing the deficit and hit 1-4 without reply to take the lead for the first time in the game, the goal from Conor Savage was a rasping ground strike, with the points coming from four different men. Brownstown regained the lead with their third goal, Barry hit another point from play and a sideline cut the blues put them three up at the final water break. Ultimately, the game was decided in the final quarter, two points from play were followed by a pointed 65 for Brownstown. Two points in as many minutes drew us level with five minutes left in the contest, the home team snook ahead on 26 minutes but that would be their final score, as we hit five points (one a cracker from Oisín Boyle) to run out winners in the end. This was a good team performance, for the first game of the year, well done to all, a special mention to Robert Burge who made his debut for the club. Team: Robert Burge, John Kiernan, Damien Grifferty, Seamus Savage, Adam Bate, Feichín Óg Brennan, Johnny Nally, Eddie Nally, Ronan Scally (0-1), Brendan McCarthy, Noel Yourell (0-2), Shane McGovern (0-4), Conor Savage (1-0), Brian McLoughlin (0-1), Barry O’Mara (0-11). Subs used; D.Hyland for Bate, Simon McCarthy for Yourell,( inj), Enda Murray for Grifferty (inj), Oisín Boyle (0-1) for B.McCarthy (inj), Ciarán McGovern for Mcloughlin.

Hurling league Division 3A

Crookedwood 4-12 Ringtown 0-12. The ‘junior’ squad continued the winning trend on Thursday evening, when Ringtown were the visitors. After a dry day, a spell of rain threatened to spoil the game for both teams and supporters. But thankfully the rain subsided, and a lively game of hurling ensued. We got off to the best possible start, straight from the throw in a long delivery from Oisín Boyle evaded the Ringtown goalie and ended up in the net. Wind assisted, we added another 2-3 (goals from Simon McCarthy & Enda Murray, two points from Brendan McCarthy and one from Ger Brennan) before the visitors registered their first score. Another goal from Ger Brennan and a pointed free from Brendan put us in a commanding position late in the first half. Ringtown added their second point but this was answered by Conor Savages two pointed frees. A Ringtown point finished first half scoring, as we held a strong lead at the break, 4-6 to 0-3. One would forgive the visitors for throwing in the towel at this point, but with the wind at their backs for the second half, they came out all guns blazing. Five unanswered points from play showed their intent, and it seemed to shake up the Wood lads, but once we settled down, we registered five points (three from Brendan, one each from Conor & Enda) in a row to restore our healthy lead. Brendans final point on 23 minutes would be our last of the game, as our opponents finished strong with four more points. Team; Adam Mitchell, John Kiernan, Antoin Savage, Jack Butler, D.Hyland, Seamus Savage, Cian Yourell, Johnny Nally, Brendan McCarthy (0-6), Oisín Boyle (1-0), Conor Savage (0-3), Simon McCarthy (1-0), Ciaran McGovern, Ger Brennan (1-1), Enda Murray (1-1). Subs; Aran Whelan for Kiernan, Cathal Bawle for C.McGovern, Noel Kiernan for S.McCarthy, C.McGovern for G.Brennan, S.McCarthy for D.Hyland. Well done to Jack Butler who made his adult debut in this match.
