ACFL Division 4

Ballinagore 2-09  Rosemount 0-10

We travelled to Rosemount on Saturday evening to take on the home sides second team in our first competitive game of the 2021 season. This was an open and enjoyable game of football from start to finish where we held a narrow 0-06 to 0-05 lead at half time. Second half goals by Paddy Ennis and debutant Cody Finnane helped us to a five point win in the end in what was a spirited and energetic opening performance by our lads. We had four young debutants on the evening and they all played a really meaningful part in our win. Luke Seery started at corner back and he came out with ball after ball in an accomplished performance belying of his age. Cathal Kelly started at midfield for us and he got involved in plenty of moves in the challenging role. Up front we had Peter Reynolds and Cody Finnane in the full forward line. Peter was involved in both our goals as he gathered a kickout and from the resultant mark he put Robbie Keegan through who setup Paddy Ennis for our first goal and it was Peters dropping shot on goal that Cody finished to seal the points for us. Cody, along with scoring that vital score, chipped in with a neat point from play and was a real threat up front especially in the second half where he was involved in most of our attacks. Well done to the team and to our four newest junior footballers! Team: Ian Seery, Luke Seery, Peter Deegan, Enda Claffey, Conan Feery, James Sheerin, Robbie Keegan, David Keegan, Cathal Kelly, David Slevin, Enda Kenny, Darren Rigney, Peter Reynolds, Cody Finnane, Paddy Ennis. Subs: Brendan Heeney, Declan Claffey, Kieran Deegan, Tommy Kelly.

Go Games Football

Lilliput Gaels U9 and U11 footballers travelled to Garrycastle on Saturday morning last. On a beautiful morning for football, both teams played brilliantly against opposition from the home side and from Rosemount. Our thanks to Garrycastle for their hospitality and well done to our wonderful young players and their mentors.

Junior Football Championship and League Fixtures

We have three remaining fixtures in the revised Division 4 mini-league. We play Shandonagh away in our next game on the weekend of 25-27 June, we play host to Garrycastle on weekend of 9-11 July while we host Athlone in our final game on weekend of 23-25 July. Continuing onto the championship a fortnight later, we play Bunbrosna in the opening round and our other group games will be in the following order: Round 2 vs Ballycomoyle; Round 3 vs St Joseph’s; Round 4 vs CFCW; Round 5 vs St Paul’s. So plenty of football to look forward to over the summer!

Pitch Development

We have been making steady progress in recent weeks with a lot of groundworks carried out on our pitch development. Most of the recent works are below ground level in preparation for our lighting columns and ball catchers so it is difficult to see real progress but with our contractor, Darragh Gannon, due back onsite in the coming weeks, we can expect to report pleny of exciting updates in the near future. Our thanks to those who have helped out in recent weeks. We will need more help and hands on deck over the next month so if you can assist with an hour here of there please let us know and we will add you to the development WhatsApp group for updates. We ask all patrons of the club to continue to adhere to the signage and to stay clear of fenced off areas in our grounds.

National Club Draw

The draw was held recently and although we had no local individual prize winners, our club won the county draw worth €1000. All clubs in Westmeath that sold over 200 tickets were included in this draw and we were the lucky ones pulled from the hat this year. Thanks to everyone who supported us in this years draw.

Irish Farm Plastics

The annual collection of farm plastics takes place at our pitch on Wednesday 23rd June so please spread the word among our local farmers.

Congratulations

Congratulations to the King family who won not one but two national media awards recently. Firstly Shane King won the award for his video production on highlighting the litter problem that is becoming more prevalent with acting support from Emma and Conor. Shane followed this up, along with the whole family getting involved, with a recent entry into the Trend Micros What's your Story competition with a video on the how we used the internet and technology during the Covid pandemic. We do hope that he is available to look after streaming our games this season and that he's not off filming the next Spielberg blockbuster!
