U11 team travelled to Kilbeggan on Saturday morning to take part in
the first round of Go Games. We fielded two teams and on a perfect
morning for football our boys and girls played some wonderful football
and displayed excellent teamwork. The team were wearing new jerseys
that were kindly sponsored by Eugene Costello. Well done to all
involved. Many thanks to Kilbeggan Shamrocks for hosting.

MATCH EVENTS
Castledaly first game of the league under new management of Enda
Sheridan and Eoin Jordan was against a strong Shandonagh team and
provided a finely balanced entertaining encounter.  The visitors in
blue missed a few chances in the opening minutes before Dan Heavin
gave the home team the advantage and a long range free was tapped over
by goalkeeper Jordan Nugent.
Castledaly began to settle into the game, with Heavin again to the
fore, pointing twice from play, capitalising on the hard work of
Fergal Hynes and Paul Kelly.   Shandonagh opened their account with
two points from play, while Justin Coughlan was unlucky not to extend
Castledaly lead.  The visitors drew level with a fine point from short
range, while the home team were guilty of missed chances at the
opposite end.
With the half closing, Shandonagh had a strong patch of play which saw
them go wide, then clip the uprights, before they finally breached the
Castledaly resolute defence with a goal.
At midfield Alan Stone and Fergal Hynes forged a strong partnership
and rose highest to collect kick out after kick out, turned over
possession in breaks and launching Castledaly on attack through Dan
Heavin who was unlucky to narrowly miss few chances.   Kevin Stone
tormented the defence winning free kicks from close range, with Dan
Heavin again thoughtfully adding another point from the hands.  A
clever run through defence from Cathal Dolan at wing forward saw him
get on the end of a smart exchange of passes and clipping his shot
over the crossbar and raising another white flag.  From midfield
Fergal Hynes strode forward to support his forwards, and stepped wide
to create space and fire over on the turn for Castledaly last score of
the first half:  Castledaly  0-6(6)  Shandonagh 1-5(8)
Trailing by two points starting the second half, Castledaly burst out
of the blocks and Paul Kelly showed all his experience to draw a free
kick on the edge of the box, taken quickly to Dan Heavin powering
through from the wing before blasting the ball to the back of the net
for Castledaly to restore their lead.  Shandonagh replied with shots
glancing off the posts and narrowly wide from play.  With Castledaly
on the rise Shandonagh were being stretched in defence.  Adam Turley
and Michael Lynch are two of a number of Castledaly underage players
growing in experience and confidence in the game.  Adam unluckily
picked up an injury, and MJ Kelly subbed in his place.  Michael Lynch
was relishing his role in attack and a quickly taken pass from Kevin
Stone allowed the youngster to coolly open his scoring account.   The
defensive core of Shane Dolan Liam Fitzpatrick Shane Fitzpatrick John
Warburton were soaking up the visitors attack blocking successive
shots but the blue shirts added a point from free after Shane
Fitzpatrick was judged to foul.
Corner forward Justin Coughlan was a thorn in the side of his opposite
number and unlucky not to add further scores before also retiring with
slight strain to be replaced by Daragh Kelly.
Kelly was quick to add to the multipronged attack, working hard with
Dan Heavin to win a free for Kevin Stone to convert and Castledaly
trail by single point.
Fresh legs were added to proceedings with Patrick Holloway stepped in
for the limping Shane Dolan. Liam Fitzpatrick and Alan Stone combined
to set Holloway on the attack and his long rang efforts sailed over
the crossbar to retrieve the lead for the home team.  From the kick
off Alan Stone rose highest to field and was unlucky to see his fine
effort drift wide of the uprights
Castledaly’s new kid on the block Olsen North was enjoying a busy game
at wing forward and his forward running was a constant threat.  With
Castledaly in possession in their own large square, Olsen determined
running drew a foul off-the-ball and the greatly advanced free kick
allowed Jordan Nugent to step out and take aim.  His shot looked to
have the distance before dropping slightly short into the square to be
untidily cleared.  Shandonagh equalised in the final minutes with both
teams were guilty of missed opportunities before the final whistle
signalled Full time score:  Castledaly  1-9(12)  Shandonagh 1-9(12)

MATCH EVENTS
Castledaly took the long road to Castletown Coole Finea Whitehall GAA
on a brilliantly sunny summer Sunday and enjoyed a quiet first half to
reach the break trailing 4 points to 1.05 with the home team early
goal the main difference.  The second half saw CCFW press their home
advantage and greater goalscoring again the difference, while
Castledaly to their credit raised a green flag on two occasions, and
added some fine free kicking on top of impressive scores from play
from seven individuals.  For some Castledaly players it was their
second game in three days while we await a return to fitness of some
key players.  In conclusion this was an exciting entertaining
energetic return to football for the club, one that brought smiles
laughter and cheers from our supporters as we celebrated being back
playing ball again after the lockdown....

The club's thoughts and prayers were with everyone and all clubs who
lost family or friends recently during the lockdown.   May they Rest
In Peace.  Ar dheis Dé go raibh a n-anamacha  uaisle.
