Experienced manager Luke Dempsey will take a break from football after leaving his home club Johnstownbridge.

The former Carlow and Westmeath boss informed the Kildare senior side of his decision in a statement following a year at the helm, citing the "uncertainty regarding planning anything in the current crisis" as the primary reason behind it.

After guiding Westmeath to All-Ireland minor and U21 titles in 1995 and 1999 respectively, Dempsey showed he hasn't lost his midas touch in managing St Joseph's Rochfortbridge to their first ever Leinster schools senior 'A' football title back in July when they beat holders Naas CBS in what was the first major GAA fixture since the break in action.
