After a thrilling 80 minutes of football in TEG Cusack Park, our Intermediate team bowed out of the 2020 season. Behind closed doors, the lads took on a strong Tang side, who alike us wanted a spot in this year’s final.
The game started steady with Niall O’Brien finding the back of the net, 6 minutes into the first half, giving the team the lift they needed to keep up with this fast paced game. David Lynch added to the scoreboard then, before Conor Keegan found the back of the net again. Points were added to the scoreboard by Morgan Gavigan, Eoin Quinn, Neal Kirby and Niall O’Brien. Things were going so well, heading into the second half of the match, leaving the half-time score; 2-05 to 0-07.
The second half seen a stronger Tang side come out however the boys did not lie down. Tang’s penalty paved the way for their comeback and it was a draw game for the concluding 10 minutes of the game. This led to extra time, on a score line of 2-09 a piece.
Tang’s scores in the opening minutes of extra time left it near impossible for us to come back into it. Points from Alan Mangan and Neal Kirby brought us back to within a point however time was up. Full time score Tang 2-12, St. Malachys 2-11.
Team: D.Sheahan, S.Fagan, L.Varley, A.Glennon, C.Murphy, D.Lynch, M.Grennan, E.Quinn, J.Bermingham, N.Kirby, N.O’Brien, C.Kane, C.Keegan, M.Gavigan, D.McDermott. Subs used: J.Clarke, C.Glennon, A.Mangan, C.O’Brien, N.McKenna.
This wraps up 2020’s season. A semi-final is not easy got to, and we congratulate the lads for getting this far and giving us great football to enjoy all year. Also to Kenny McKinley and his background team for their continuous time and effort to get us this far. Here’s to 2021.
