Congratulations

The club would like to congratulate Kevin and Sandra Boyle on the birth of their baby boy last Saturday. It was noted at the time but the reason wasn't clear but now we know Kevins storming performance last Sunday in the SFC relegation final was obviously to ensure his new young man retained his status as an underage player in a senior club. We wish them all the best.

U16 Girls

The Shandonagh under 16 girls played their championship final on Saturday last away to Athlone. Playing in dry conditions against a strong breeze the girls found it difficult to get scores. The hosts started much stronger and built up a 7 points lead before Shandonagh got back into the game converting a penalty. The Athlone side struck for 3 goals before half time and held a commanding lead 4-10 to 1-2 at the break. The Shandonagh girls rallied well in the second half and restricted a strong Athlone side to only 4 points and scored 2-2 themselves and were unfortunate with some  narrowly missed chances. The hosts went on to win on a final score line of 4-14 to 3-4. A battling performance against a physically bigger team was unfortunately not enough in the end. Thanks to the U14s who played their part and to all the squad throughout the year who gave everything for the cause. The disappointment felt at the final whistle was testament to the efforts made all year and the expectation the girls had going into the game.
There is great camaraderie in the squad and they are looking forward to ladies minor football and supporting the U14s in their final next Saturday. Well done to this young squad on reaching a county final, as the saying goes “you have to lose one to win one” roll on next week and next year!! Thanks to all the coaches, mentors and club officials for great support all year.

U12 Boys
The Shandonagh u12 boys took to the field against Moate All Whites on Sunday evening last in the Garrycastle tournament. On a beautiful warm evening the Shandonagh boys proved too strong for a spirited Moate team and took the points.

U11 & U9 Boys

The under 11 and under 9 boys both travelled to Kinnegad last Saturday in their third outing in this year's Go Games. The U9 boys played 2 matches breaking those in attendance into U8s and U9s. Both teams are a joy to watch as the camaraderie, support, endeavour, bravery and fun they have is really something to behold. The u11s were their usual self with a brand of football that can only reap more rewards in the future. This is a fine team with the skills, toughness, speed and workrate ensuring they are coming out on top in all of this years fixtures so far.

U7 Boys

The under 7 boys had their chance to don the Shandonagh jersey in their first ever game against neighbours Mullingar Shamrocks in Ballynacargy last Saturday morning. The smiles afterwards said it all as they thoroughly enjoy their mornings football. A great morning by all accounts. Well done to the boys and their coaches.

Westmeath SFC Relegation Final Result

Last Sunday our senior men proved their mettle by beating Castledaly down in Tang and retain their senior status for 2021. Both teams went into this prepared to give everything and that they did. Castledaly could be said to edge the first three quarters but could not put any distance between themselves and Shandonagh. Shandonagh made it hard for themselves in the first half with some wayward shooting that would have seen them go in ahead at half time if they had converted half their chances. During the second half the tension was palpable with both teams doing their utmost to keep the error count down and contain their opponents. The fourth quarter after the second half water break was when the Shandonagh men really stood up. A second goal fisted to the net by Brian Kavanagh after some great work by Mickey Boyle saw them go ahead of Castledaly and they couldn't be caught. The Shandonagh team held out with great composure and nerves and never gave up in their total commitment to the task at hand - retain senior status. The final score was Shandonagh 2:08, Castledaly 0:11. Commiserations to Castledaly and we hope to see them back up at senior very shortly in the future. Credit to the referee Jim Rock for maintaining a sporting, tough and very entertaining game between these two clubs. Thanks to Tang GFC for an extremely well prepared field.
