Castledaly Seniors fell to a strong Shandonagh in relegation battle on
Sunday 13th in Tang and ended a 25 year senior status adventure where
they competed in championship finals and fought relegation battles.
Both teams registered two points before the first water break, Fergal
Hynes and a Kevin Stone free kick, as Darragh Kelly and Aaron Nugent
were first to their ball, and Fergal Hynes Alan Stone Paddy Holloway
were winning their midfield battle.
Two points from Fergal Hynes sandwiched before and after points from
Alan Stone and Lorcan Dolan, to lead by 5 points, but Shandonagh
breached the Castledaly defence with a goal on 27 minutes and bring
them back into the game, with half time score: Castledaly 0-7(7)
Shandonagh 1-2(5)
Shandonagh added the first second half point, but Castledaly corner
forward Lorcan Dolan retrieved the lead, showed class and skill to
take passes from Alan stone and Fergal Hynes and engineer two free
kicks and a point from play. Shandonagh added a point to reduce the
deficit to 2 points, and then their second goal caught the Castledaly
defence napping, with a suspicion of square ball falling on deaf ears,
as the ball was passed across the goals and punched to the top left
corner. Lorcan Dolan added what proved to be Castledaly last score
of the day, and his team trail by the minimum. Aaron Nugent and Alan
Stone both saw efforts saved and parried wide as Shandonagh brought
all 15 players back to defend their narrow lead. Despite Castledaly
best efforts it was not to be their day, and a quarter century senior
status ends. Full time score: Castledaly 0-11(11) Shandonagh
2-8(14)
