Cahill steps down in Waterford

July 15, 2022

Liam Cahill as Waterford senior hurling manager.

Waterford are the latest county to find themselves without a senior hurling manager following Liam Cahill's decision to step down from the position.

The Tipperary native has opted not to take up the offer to remain at the Deise helm for another season, having spent three years in charge.

Cahill led Waterford to Munster and All-Ireland SHC finals in his first year, only to come unstuck to an all-conquering Limerick side on both occasions. He also guided the Deise to their first Allianz League Division 1 title in seven years, but they missed out on the All-Ireland series this summer after failing to advance from the Munster round-robin stage with three losses from four outings.

The Ballingarry clubman's resignation has prompted speculation that he is on the cusp of being named as the new Tipperary senior hurling boss in succession to the outgoing Colm Bonnar.

Cahill guided Tipperary to multiple All-Ireland successes at underage level between 2015 and 2019, making him the obvious choice to replace his former county teammate in the Premier County hotseat.

A statement from the Waterford county board this afternoon reads: "Waterford GAA wish to announce that Liam Cahill has today informed Waterford County Board that he has decided not to take up the option of a fourth year as Manager of the Waterford Senior Hurling team."

"All in Waterford GAA wish to sincerely thank Liam and all his backroom team for their tremendous work, commitment and dedication to the Waterford Senior Hurling team over the past three years which culminated in an Allianz League title in 2022 along with Munster and All-Ireland Final appearances.

"Waterford GAA would like to wish Liam every success in his future endeavours.

"A process will now be put in place for the appointment of a new Senior Hurling Team Management.

"Waterford GAA will not be issuing any further comment at this time."
