The Longford hurlers have resumed training after suspending all activities for a 10-day period due to the extremely high numbers of the Omnicron Covid variant that’s circulating nationwide.

Newly-appointed manager Adrian Moran had his players back on the pitch at the weekend ahead of next Sunday’s season opener against Wicklow in the Kehoe Shield. The decision to suspend activities came after members of the panel held a successful sponsored walk in aid of Longford Hospice over the Christmas period.

“We had already decided to cut back on social activities during December. We went ahead with the charity walk for the Hospice on December 28, but had already cancelled our scheduled Christmas night out,” Moran told Tony Ghee.

“I had a discussion with our management team and the County Board, and we all felt that it was a wise decision to suspend training. We were due back on Thursday, December 30, but we decided to take an extended 10-day break until Saturday, January 8.

“We also had to keep to our core values of trust, respect, family and unity. This course of action reinforces these values of what the Longford senior hurlers are about.”

The former Westmeath U21 manager added: “It certainly has hindered preparations for the Wicklow game, but the players followed personal training plans to maintain their fitness levels until team training sessions resumed.”
