The late Tom McGarry.

The death has occurred of five-time Railway Cup winning Limerick hurler Tom McGarry.

Unlucky to have played in an era (between 1956 and 1963) when Limerick didn't win any major honours, the Thomandgate native is regarded as one of the finest hurlers the county has ever produced.

Lining out alongside the likes of the legendary Christy Ring and Jimmy Doyle, McGarry won five Railway Cup medals with Munster during that time.

A multi-talented sportsman, Tom was equally at home on the soccer and rugby pitches and the handball court.

He also claimed three Limerick SFC titles with his local Treaty Sarsfields as well as All-Ireland handball titles in singles and doubles.

He later became a member of Claughan GAA and served as administrator and coach with the Childers Road club.

In 2009, Munster GAA presented McGarry with a Special Merit Awards.
