Joe Canning's Portumna slumped to another heavy defeat in the Galway SHC, losing 4-21 to 1-18 to Castlegar in Loughrea this afternoon.

Canning and his nephew Jack Canning both saw red in a 16-point first round reverse at the hands of Sarsfields. Portumna were looking to put these woes behind them but ended up conceding four goals for the second game running.

It doesn't get any easier for Portumna either as next up in Group 3 is holders St Thomas' who edged out Sarsfields by 0-22 to 1-18.

Castlegar were unlucky not to get something from their opener against St Thomas' having let a 10 point lead slip. However, Cashel have recovered nicely and now face into a winner takes all clash with Sarsfields.

In Group 2, a Kenny Park double header saw Turloughmore trounce Oranmore-Maree 1-21 to 0-11 and Liam Mellows beat Clarinbridge 2-16 to 0-13.
