Fitzgibbon Cup: Mary I down WIT for home quarter-final

January 23, 2020

Mary I now have home advantage for their quarter-final

Mary Immaculate College will have home advantage in next week’s Fitzgibbon Cup quarter-finals after making their goals count against Waterford IT this afternoon.

It finished 2-11 to 0-15 in favour of the hosts at the Mary I Grounds, with goals from Shane Ryan and Gary Cooney proving crucial in the end for the victors.

Despite losing Waterford star Austin Gleeson just 12 minutes into this Round 3 encounter, it was the visitors that led by 0-8 to 0-6 at the halfway stage.

However, they’d endure a disastrous restart which saw Ryan hitting their net after 48 seconds and Mary I soon had the margin out to three from there.

WIT twice pulled the margin back to one but couldn’t square things up as Cooney ghosted to raise a second green flag for the 2017 winners, ensuring them a return home turf next week while the Waterford students must now travel for their last eight clash.

There are two more Round 3 clashes later this evening which see Cork IT hosting NUI Galway (throw-in 7.00pm) before UL and Maynooth University clash at the UL Grounds at 7.30pm.
