2019 was a write-off for Murphy

Eoin Murphy has described 2019 as a "waste of a year", despite Kilkenny contesting Leinster and All-Ireland SHC finals.

The Cats goalkeeper took no consolation from losing both finals to Wexford and Tipperary, telling the Irish Daily Star at the official announcement of UPMC's 10-year naming rights deal with Nowlan Park: "Look, we got to the Leinster final, we got to the All-Ireland final, but we didn't actually win any silverware.

"I'd always say this: Leinster is great to win but, if you don't win Leinster, there's always a second chance you could get into the All-Ireland series.

“I always say that at Christmas time, the only teams that will be remembered are the All-Ireland champions — and that’s Tipperary and Dublin this year. For ourselves and Kerry, beaten in the final, there’s no use saying you’re a finalist. You get a bit of a holiday, a bit of a trip out of it as a reward.

“Other than that, there’s no difference whatsoever. Okay, we got to a Leinster final and an All-Ireland final, that’s a small bit of progress for our younger players to get that experience and hopefully they keep driving things on because they want to experience that again.

“But unless you win an All-Ireland, it’s really no use. It’s genuinely not. It’s a waste of a year, honestly.”
