More rules lead to more inconsistency, says Gough

There are “way too many rules” in gaelic football, according to top referee David Gough.

“If they were simplified it would make our job easier,” the Meath official points out in an interview in today’s Irish Daily Star. “And every year new rules are brought in.

“Only at congress this year we were talking about 43 different aggressive fouls that I have to categorise in my head – and that’s just aggressive, player-on-player.

“Lee Keegan throws a GPS at a football and now we have a 45th rule and then David Moran tries to get lifted by Tommy Walsh and there’s another rule.

“Then someone’s not happy with the application of a different rule, or the way the game’s being played now and so another rule is introduced.”

He concluded: “We’re getting more and more rules, which means it’s getting more complex and which means there’s more inconsistency.”
