Kieran Donaghy has described a local newspaper report that he was set to be appointed as the new Roscommon senior football manager as "absolute rubbish".

The Kerry great, who is currently part of Kieran McGeeney's Armagh management, was quick to dismiss the Connacht Telegraph report after it appeared online last night. The Mayo-based newspaper claimed that Donaghy was replacing Anthony Cunningham in the role and that his former Kerry team-mate Paul Galvin would be part of his backroom team.

It came as delegates were told at a Roscommon county board meeting that the selection process was "very close to the interview stage".

Donaghy tweeted: “Absolute rubbish.

“I did not speak to one single person associated with Roscommon GAA.

“What has happened to fact checking a story these days? WhatsApp rumours are a scary thing.”

Meanwhile, former star forward Frankie Dolan - whose Roscommon Gaels charges dethroned Padraig Pearses as county and provincial champions last weekend - will be one of new Roscommon U20 manager Noel Dunning's selectors in 2023. The other selector will be Strokestown’s David Neary.
