Gael-Linn Interprovincial Camogie Championship
October 20, 2006
The annual Gael-Linn Interprovincial Camogie Championship takes place at Pairc Tailteann in Navan. The competition, which is in it's jubilee year, will see a senior final taking place between Leinster and Munster with the junior final comprising of Connacht and Ulster.
The senior final will see the cream of Ireland's camogie talent go head to head. All-Ireland champions Cork have 14 players in the Munster squad and there is the potential of having nearly an all Rebel back line. The Munster team will be captained by 2006 All-Star nominee Jennifer O'Leary and will include All-Ireland Final Player of the Match Anna Geary and arguably Tipperary's best player in the All-Ireland defeat, Joanne Ryan.
Leinster will be up against it but they too can call on some of the country's best players. Among them is Dublin star Louise O'Hara who guided Dublin to All-Ireland Junior glory this year. The Leinster side will be captained by 2005 Wexford All-Star full-back Catherine O'Loughlin. O'Loughlin is one of eight Weford players on the panel which is dominated by Kilkenny who will have ten players in contention for the starting 15.
Munster will be hot favourites to win their 20th senior Gael-Linn title with Leinster hoping to add to the 24 titles they have already amassed. Munster should just edge it on experience and strength in depth but Leinster will be no pushovers in their own back yard.
The junior final will also be a tight affair. For Connacht the squad is mainly made up from Galway players with 20 Tribeswomen taking their place alongside five players from Roscommon. The big advantage here for Connacht is familiarity with so many Galway players in the panel they may gel a lot better than the Ulster side.
It has been a big year for Ulster camogie with both Derry and Armagh performing well in Championship action. Derry were unlucky to lose to Dublin in the Junior final, while Armagh won the Junior Shield final with a convincing victory over Laois. Ulster always perform well in the Inter-pros and may just edge this one to add an 8th Junior title.
