FL Div 4 final: Drums disappoint

June 14, 2022

Drumconrath's Oran Brady with Kian Gillespie Kilmainhamwood during the Division 4 FL final at Pairc Tailteann

Kilmainhamwood 3-9 Drumconrath 1-9

Two 1st half goals and a calamity of errors in 1st half injury time cost Drumconrath a chance of winning a 1st League title since 1996.

Despite Paddy Carolan's 9th well taken 9th minute goal Drumconrath had battled back into contention trailing 1-3 to 0-4 as the game entered the 31st minute of the 1st half. The concession of 1-3 from then to the 33rd minute left Drums with a mountain to climb in the 2nd half.

The game had started brightly with the Wood striking 1st with a point within a minute. Terry Skelly in his 1st full game for the Club in a number of years had equailized with his trusty left foot. Soon after Kwood had taken the lead again as Matthew Durnin leveled the game. Drumconrath with Skelly in tremendous form had plenty of play but were rocked when Carolan had fired home. A mystifying Black Card for Daragh Dunne had put the Reds under pressure but during the 10th minute surjourn Drums had kept the Wood scoreless while closing the gap by 1 point.

Sean Kane pulled off a save for the ages to give Drums a reason to believe as Steven Crosby pointed twice to narrow the gap but Kwood also notched another score with the interval looming to see just 2 points between the North Meath neighbours.

The leaking of 1-3 in injury time undid all the good work undone to that point saw the team in White take a flattering eight point lead to the Dressing Rooms (2-6 to 0-4).

Drumconrath came out on the front foot for the 2nd half and held the Wood scoreless in the 3rd quarter as Durnin pointed twice early on and Crosby added another on 44 minutes. The team in Red continued to push forward and had a penalty shout waved away from beyond the half-way line who must be the best sighted Official in Meath as he awarded a 13m free instead. A major at that stage would have really put the game in the melting pot but Crosby pointed the free to leave 4 points between the sides.

Crosby added another point but the relieved Wood fired over 3 quick fire points to stretch the lead back to 6 points and when they engineered a third goal on 54 minutes Kilmainhamwood had both hands firmly on the Cup. Drumconrath battled on and an injury time consolation goal from Crosby ended the scoring as on the Day Kilmainhamwood deserved their victory and both Clubs will now look forward to a decent run in the Junior B Championship which if the League form has anything to do with it should be a close affair.
