Meath's Newman calls time on inter-county career

January 05, 2022

Meath's Mickey Newman celebrates.

Mickey Newman has called time on his inter-county playing days with Meath.

The 31-year-old Kilmainham attacker had a brilliant debut season in 2013 that saw him nominated for an All-Star after scoring 1-27 but injuries plagued him throughout his career.

He was forced to miss the entire 2018 season, and, despite returning in 2019 (in which he scored 5-55 across league and championship as the Royals qualified for the Super 8s), another hip problem scuppered his chances of donning the green and gold in 2020.

Specialists advised that he step away from the county game following two hip surgeries but a determined Newman returned to the Meath fold again last year.

His last appearance for the Royals came as a substitute in the Leinster SFC quarter-final victory over Longford.

Newman tweeted: "Time to step aside! Thank you to everyone who has helped and supported me over the years.

"Great memories and friendships made along the way! #anmhíabú"
