U20 FC: Ballinabrackey-Clonard advance

December 04, 2021

Ballinabrackey's David Carroll

Ballinabrackey/Clonard 0-15 Simonstown 0-5

On a wet and miserable Friday night the newly formed amalgamated side of Ballinabrackey/Clonard travelled to Simonstown gaa for the first round of U20 championship.

The Ballinabrackey/Clonard side made their presence known very fast with a well taken free from Niall Smullen. This first score gave the amalgamated side great confidence with three more scores all coming from play from Barry Thompson, David Carroll and Niall Smullen. Simonstown were struggling to break through defence but they did manage to kick a score before the first water break leaving the score as 4 point to 1. Simonstown came charging through the field after the water break to kick two scores without response. It became evident very quickly that Niall Smullen was going to cause a lot of problems for the Simonstown defence as he went on to kick 2 more scores here. Simonstown didn’t panic though and came back fighting and kicked another score to leave the Ballinabrackey/Clonard side ahead by two points at half time. S

imonstown got the first score on the board after half time but this was to be their last score of the game as the Ballinabrackey/Clonard lads took charge of the game. Three more scores came from Barry Thompson, Niall Smullen and Aidan Fitzpatrick to leave the second water break score as Ballinabrackey/Clonard 0:09 Simonstown 0:05. The Ballinabrackey/Clonard backs and midfielders put in serious work in defence to turn over possession when it was crucial. It’s hard to name one back in particular as they were a solid unit of defence working simultaneously up the field together. Super sub Brian Dunne found his feet very quick and kicked a score over the bar just minutes on the pitch. Aidan Fitzpatrick kicked a great 45 and David Carroll kicked another point with ease but it was Niall Smullen again kicking 3 more superb points to really finish off this match.

The final score Ballinabrackey 0-15 Simonstown 0-5. This strong amalgamated side march on to the Semi-Final next Friday night. Congratulations on a great win in tough conditions lads.
