Drumree's Gareth Rooney with John Foley Navan O'Mahonys during the Meath IHC clash at Pairc Tailteann

Drumree 3-16 Navan O’Mahony’s 0-13

Three goals in the final quarter left the scoreboard looking rather dour from a Navan O’Mahony’s perspective in this Round 3 Intermediate Hurling Championship encounter in headquarters.  While Drumree held the game from the opening minutes, it was within grasp for the Navan side at all times until the closing quarter.

The scoring started with a Drumree point from play after two minutes.  It was tit for tat stuff in the opening ten minutes with the sides taking turns raising the white flag. Drumree pushed ahead in the final minutes before referee Ciaran Flynn blew for the water-break and led by six points to three, with Jack Walsh, David Quirke and John Foley scoring for O’Mahony’s.

Drumree were quick off the mark in the second quarter and had extended their lead to five points after twenty minutes. Darragh Connell, one of Navan O’Mahony’s younger players, steadied the ship for his side with a well taken free. The gap was further narrowed to two points after Walsh and midfielder Paddy Dillon scored from play within a minute period. Drumree responded well with a point from play.

It looked dangerous for Navan O’Mahony’s when a Drumree player ran straight towards the goals. His shot was on target but netminder Shane Flannery managed to get his hurley to the top right corner to deflect the ball. The resulting 65 was converted by the Drumree player which turned out to be the final score of the half.

Half Time Score: Drumree 0-10 Navan O’Mahony’s 0-06

Things seemed to be improving for the Brews Hill side in the second half when Foley and midfielder Sean Smyth found the target from play, reducing the deficit to two points. Again, Drumree responded well and would have likely been through on goal from the resulting puckout only for a great interception from Ben McEntagart.

Drumree kept working hard and took a well-taken point from play ten minutes into the second half. Again, Foley kept O’Mahony’s within touching distance with another point. By the second half water-break, Drumree held the lead by four points.

The opening play of the final quarter ended with a goal for Drumree, leaving them seven points clear of Navan O’Mahony’s and enough of a cushion to push on with. O’Mahony’s didn’t give up and points from play from Smyth and Dillon kept them in the game until Drumree managed to find the net again after twenty-five minutes. Within ninety seconds, the green flag was raised for a third time and there was no coming back for Navan O’Mahony’s. Drumree added a further two points before Foley finished out the scoring for the day with a point from play.
