Navan O'Mahonys 4-06 Gaeil Colmcille 0-12
Spectators in Paddy O’Brien Park were treated to a feast of goals in this floodlit Premier Division 7 encounter on Monday evening. The win was enough to leave Navan O’Mahony’s young team defending their spot at the top of the group going into the final rounds.
Navan O’Mahony’s took a few minutes to settle at the opening of the game when Gaeil Colmcille scored the first two points of the game, one from a free followed by one from play. In the tenth minute, it looked like the Kells side were going to add to their tally, making a good run on a direct path to the goals. Not so said Neil Maloney, who defiantly stood his ground to dispossess the Kells player. It was directly from this that O’Mahony’s brought the ball up to the far end of the field and a good one-two from Adam McEvoy and Christy Dillon resulted in a goal from play from Ben Forde.
Gaeil Colmcille advanced again after the water break with three points from play to go ahead again. Half forward Bradlee Connor settled things for his side with two points from frees. Two goals from play from Adam McEvoy in a five-minute period left six points between the teams going into injury time before Gaeil Colmcille grabbed the last score of the half to leave the score at half time 3-02 to 0-06 in favour of the hosts. Michael Reavey, Daniel MvEvoy and Mark Coen formed a strong half-back line and were instrumental in both keeping Kells out and supporting the O’Mahony’s forwards.
The first ten minutes of the second half were dominated by Navan O’Mahony’s with McEvoy adding to his earlier tally with two points from play. Ciaran Vaughan found the net in the tenth minute of the second half. Followed by a point from play from Forde and a McEvoy converted free, there was eleven points between the sides at the second water break. The scoring forwards were well supported by Jack Flynn and Dillon as well as midfielders John Gorman and Tom Collins.
Gaeil Colmcille had a strong period in the final quarter scoring five points in this quarter while keeping the Navan side scoreless, albeit it was not enough to catch the impressive Navan O’Mahony’s. Credit to Niall Devlin who kept a clean sheet, supported by Maloney, Jack Boyle and Darragh Murphy.
Substitutes Jamie Crowley, Darren Clarke, Kevin Ryan and Graham Dolan provided fresh legs in the final quarter when it was needed and the starting players had given all that was asked of them. Overall, this was an impressive team performance and sets the side up nicely going forward
