Navan O’Mahony’s 1-12 Wolfe Tones 1-09

The sun was shining bright in Kilberry this evening as O’Mahony’s hurlers got their first win of the season in the second round of the Billy Byrne Cup. It was Wolfe Tones who put the first score on the board with the first play from the throw in. A few minutes later, Cormac Keyes struck a long distance point from his left hand side, outside the 65 yard line on the side-line.

Both sides managed to raise the white flag again before the referee blew his whistle for the second half water-break with a well-taken score from John Foley. At the water break, the scoreboard read 0-03 to 0-02 in favour of the visitors.  More scores followed for the Navan side including impressive points from Brian Dunne and half back Evan Brady, but these were nullified by a Wolfe Tones goal to leave only the narrowest of margins between the sides at the break – 0-07 to 1-03.

Shortly after the interval, the Kilberry outfit pointed to bring the sides level once again. A high ball into the square was going nowhere only the back of the net when substitute Richie Hogan dived at the goals to bat the ball and raise the green flag. The sides exchanged points again with the gap narrowing to four points, 1-09 to 1-05 at the second half water break.

Wolfe Tones never gave up and the game was fought out to the end but O’Mahony’s kept the scoreboard tipping over. Despite being outscored by a point in a high-scoring final quarter, they had enough to take the points on a final score line of 1-12 to 1-09.
