Feis Cup: Two from two for Moynalvey

June 17, 2021

Moynalvey's Ciaran Harnan

Moynalvey made it two wins from two outings in the Feis Cup when accounting for visitors Navan O’Mahonys at Kilmore Park Moynalvey on Wednesday evening 16th June.

Moynalvey 5-9
Navan O’Mahonys 1-13

Despite both sides registering fourteen scores, it was Moynalvey’s ability to carve open the Navan side’s defence for five goals that proved the difference.

The opening score of the game came in the 4th minute via a David McLoughlin free, with Navan O’Mahony’s Jake Regan replying for the visitors from a converted mark a minute later.

The first of Moynalvey’s green flags was raised in the 10th minute when Moynalvey centre forward Darren Brennan fired to the back of Colm Honan’s net.

Two minutes later the first daylight was put between the sides when Ciaran Harnan netted to leave it 2-1 to 0-1 after 12 minutes. An Eoin Joyce score for O’Mahony’s left it 2-1 to 0-2 at the first water break.

Three Jake Regan points, one from play and two frees were traded with Moynalvey’s David McLoughlin to leave it 2-3 to 0-5 after 26 minutes.

Two well taken Moynalvey points, the first from Sean Duggan and the second from Cathal McCabe left the two goals between the sides, 2-5 to 0-5.

A brace of Navan O’Mahonys points left the half time score board reading 2-5 to 0-7 in favour of the home side.

A minute after the restart O’Mahonys Eoin Joyce converted a free to narrow the gap to three. This was as good as the O’Mahonys revival got though, as three unanswered Moynalvey goals from Ciaran Harnan (2) and Brian O’Reilly between the 2nd and 11th minute of the half extended Moynalvey’s advantage to twelve points, 5-5 to 0-8.

Three O’Mahonys placed balls and a well taken score from corner forward Ronan Clarke either side of a couple of David McLoughlin frees for Moynalvey left it 5-7 to 0-12 with 55 minutes played.

Two Moynalvey points from substitute Shaun Deering and Fearghal McCabe were countered by a consolation goal and late free for O’Mahonys to leave the full-time score 5-9 to 1-13.

The cliché goals win games definitely applied to this game with the scoring plaudits going to the youngest of the four Harnan brothers on the field Ciaran for his hat-trick of goals.

Next up for Moynalvey is a trip to Grangedodden for a round three tie against Gaeil Colmcille next Wednesday 23rd.

O'Mahonys Report

Navan O’Mahony’s 1-13 Moynalvey  5-9

With fourteen scores apiece, the old adage that goals win matches certainly rang true in Moynalvey in this Feis Cup encounter with the hosts running out eight-point victors. A young O’Mahony’s team never gave up but Moynalvey’s experience stood them in the end.

The scoring opened after four minutes when the Moynalvey corner forward pointed from a free. Within sixty seconds, at the opposite end of the field, a ball well received by Jake Regan resulted in a mark which was duly converted. The visitors were left chasing the game from the opening quarter when two goals in quick succession in the 10th and 12th minutes put some distance between the teams. A well taken score from Eoin Joyce just as the whistle blew for the first water break left the score at that stage at 2-01 to 0-02.

Regan converted a free shortly after the resumption to get the scoring going again, before Moynalvey found themselves closing in on goal again. A quick reaction from goalkeeper Colm Honan deflected the ball off the post and prevented a goal before the Moynalvey forward grabbed the ball and stuck it over the bar.  O’Mahony’s first sub of the game was introduced in the 24th minute when Cormac Keyes replaced Jack Bellamy. A high scoring five minutes ended the first half, with both sides raising the flag several times. The final score of the first half was a point from midfielder Ruairí Smyth, his first game in the Blue and White of Navan O’Mahony’s. At the break, the hosts led 2-05 to 0-07.

Eoin Joyce opened the scoring for O’Mahony’s in the second half with a pointed free to narrow the gap down to three. This was to be short-lived however, as Moynalvey soon broke through to find themselves one-on-one with Honan to score their third goal of the game minutes into the second half.

O’Mahony’s had several good passages of play but struggled to convert this possession. Two further goals from Moynalvey in the 5th and 12th minutes of the second half extended their lead and put the game out of the grasp of the Navan men. At the second water break, the scoreboard read 5-06 to 0-09.

O’Mahony’s never dropped the heads in spite of the score difference and kept battling to the end. Corner forward Ronan Clarke opened up the scoring in the final quarter with a well taken point and O’Mahony’s added several points in the final 10 minutes, when they were down to 14 men due to a black card for Evan Coffey. Substitute Seán Smyth found the Moynalvey net in injury time before adding a point to his tally, leaving the final score of 5-09 to 1-13 in favour of Moynalvey.
