The late Nick Farrelly

There was a great sadness in Moynalty and the surrounding area with the news of the death of Nick Farrelly, Kingsfort, Moynalty.

Nick was president of Moynalty GFC and a lifelong supporter of the club. He played all his football with the club and was a teak tough corner back. After his playing days Nick got involved in the administrative side of the club and served on many committees as well as being a selector. However, it is as a supporter that Nick will be best remembered. He was an avid attender at games watching his sons David and Paul play and in later years he saw his grandson Dylan don the red jersey. Nick was proud to see David manage the Meath minor team and saw his grandson Harry O’Higgins win a Leinster MFC with Meath in 2018 but when it came to county football Cavan was his team and he got great pleasure in seeing Cavan claim the Anglo Celt cup before Christmas.

Nick worked with C.I.E for many years and then set up a horse transporting business in the early 1970s. He worked with local trainers Cyril and John Bryce Smith, Charlie McCartan, Des McDonogh, Noel Meade and Michael Cunningham and most horse trainers throughout the county and beyond. He transported horses to all race meetings throughout Ireland as well as to bloodstock sales and various stud farms. He was known for his punctuality and sympathetic handling of horses and all involved knew that the animals would be transported safely.

Nick loved the country way of life and he immersed himself in supporting the Steam Threshing and in the early years collected working horses for various displays from around the country. Horse owners were confident of the safe return of the animals because of Nick’s judgement and care. In later years he got great enjoyment in the local Men’s Shed. Nick was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Anne, sons Paul and David, daughters Mary and Nicola and his extended family. Nick’s funeral mass took place on Thursday, January 14th in the Church of the Assumption, Moynalty.
