Sheelan Cup: Fionnbarra lose out to Mattock

June 14, 2021

Naomh Fionnbarra 1-8(11) Mattock Rangers 2-9(15)

Naomh Fionnbarra suffered a 4-point defeat to Mattock Rangers at Collon on Sunday morning in the 3rd Round of the Paddy Sheelan Cup.

Played in beautiful conditions, the Collon men with the started brightest and raced into a 0-1 lead after 5 minutes.  the Finbarrs then clicked into gear with a point from a free by Ciaran Markey and a superb goal by Conor Osborne to lead by 3 at the first water break.  The Mattock men were probably playing the better football but some tigerish defending by the Barrs backline meant that they were shooting under pressure. A well taken point by Liam Markey, a fine score from Conor Osborne and a free by Ciaran Markey stretched the lead for the Togher men at the break to 4 points. 1 of the Collon players received his marching orders towards the end of the first half which meant the Barrs had an extra man for the entire second period.  Half time score: Naomh Fionnbarra 1-4(7) Mattock Rangers 0-3(3).

The Collon men made the better start to the second half reducing the deficit back to the minimum but the Finbarrs kept them at arm's length with another couple of good scores by Conor Osborne and another free by Ciaran Markey.  At the 2nd water break the Togher men were still a point ahead.  Mattock however dug in during the final quarter and scored 2 goals to turn the game on its head, while a point from Michael McArdle was all that the Barrs could muster in reply.  Once again, result was not what was hoped for, but with a very stretched panel where a number of players played who were not fully fit, hopefully the panel will be stronger for next weekend to face Oliver Plunketts.  Final score: Naomh Fionnbarra 1-8(11) Mattock Rangers 2-9(15).

Up next weekend is the 1st Round of the Division 2 League v Oliver Plunketts in Mell, Drogheda on Sunday 20th June at 2pm.
