Dromard club notes

April 06, 2021

Sympathy: Dromard GAA extends its sympathy to the Taaffe family and the Reilly family, Kiltycon, on the recent death of Chris Taaffe in the US.

Four month’s on from the passing of the great Johnny Creegan, Dromard GAA is sad to report on the death of another member of the Creegan family and a former Dromard and Longford player, Oliver Creegan, Cavan Town and formerly of Crott, Moyne.  The club offers its sympathy to Oliver's wife Patricia and children Damian, Rhona, Fiacre and Fergal and to the extended Creegan family. The club is deeply indebted to Oliver and the Creegan family for the huge contribution that they have made to Dromard GAA over many years. Oliver played for Dromard along with his brothers Seamus, Johnny and PJ. At underage level, Oliver played with Colmcille as Dromard had no minor team at that time. Oliver was a talented player who generally lined out in the full back line and midfield. He played county minor football for Longford before progressing to senior ranks. James McNerney’s history of Dromard parish records that in 1962, Oliver played on both the Longford senior and junior teams. In that year, he was on the Longford junior team that played Down and Laois. (Incidentally, on the same Longford team against Laois were brothers Eamon and Neilus Corkery. Fr Corkery later served as Parish Priest of Dromard for 27 years.) Oliver was a member of the famous Longford panel that won the National League in 1966. His job for the Department of Agriculture took him to Monaghan and in 1969 Oliver won the Monaghan Senior Championship with Ballybay Pearse Bros, beating Castleblaney 3-5 to 5 points. Oliver later moved to Athy but transferred back to his beloved Dromard, commuting the long journey from Athy to Kiltycon for training and match fixtures. In 1970, Oliver was a member of the Dromard panel that won the Junior league and Championship double. These were Dromard’s first titles since 1946. Oliver continued to play with Dromard until the mid-seventies.  In 1982, he travelled and played with the Dromard team that toured New York, Connecticut, and Vancouver. From the mid-late 1980s Oliver became involved with Cavan Gael’s underage club as his own family started playing and successfully managed several underage teams. He was a "Hall of Fame" Winner with Ballybay Pearse Brothers GAA Club in 2017. Oliver was a life-long supporter of Dromard GAA club and attended every match fixture possible up to the point where he was no longer able to do so.  When he was unable to attend matches, he would ring his brother Johnny for a full match commentary and analysis – no doubt the account he received would have been as good as if he had attended the game in person. Oliver’s funeral took place in Cavan Cathedral on Monday with burial afterwards in Cullies cemetery. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
