St. Kieran’s GAA County Junior A Hurling Championship Round 2:

St. Kieran’s 2.12 St. Patrick’s 0.15

Following defeat in round 1 the Junior hurlers got their county championship campaign back on track in fine fashion this past Sunday with an excellent victory over St. Patrick’s in Croagh. It was the Rhebogue men who started the game the brighter and held a two-point advantage going in at the first water break, 7-5. Our opening quarter scores came from efforts from Eoin McEnery, Johnny McCarthy, and Ian Mackessy. Both sides were level at the interval 0.11 to 1.8 with our goal coming from the ever threatening johnny McCarthy operating at full forward and having an extremely fruitful afternoon. The third quarter proved to be our downfall in round 1 but we learned from the previous game and really capitalised this week quickly taking the game by the scruff of the neck and racing into a two-goal led with our second goal coming from Ian Mackessy. As the game drew to a conclusion we hung on for dear life as we looked to pick up our first points of the championship. The team showed great character in the final quarter to see out the game as St. Patrick’s applied enormous pressure. At the final whistle there was a great sense of achievement at having secured the victory. It was great to see stalwarts Paudie McCarthy and Donie Nolan back in the fray as their experience proved vital in the second half when our backs were against the wall in the final quarter. With the all important two points secured we now look forward to round three with optimism. Next up we square off against Garryspillane this Saturday afternoon. Garryspillane had an excellent opening round victory over Ahane before succumbing to a heavy defeat to Kilteely/Dromkeen this past weekend. Both sides met in the group phase of the championship last season. On that occasion we put in a very strong performance to earn the victory and hopefully we can build on the last weekends performance and come away with the spoils once again. Saturday’s round three encounter throws in at 4pm in Kilmallock/
