SENIOR HURLERS

 

It was a most welcome sight and sound to have a crowd present at the Gaelic Grounds on Saturday evening.

It was for our senior hurlers opening round tie v Kilmallock in the Irish Wire County Senior Hurling Championship.

We began the game with 6 different personnel from last year's County final win so, as would be the case we slowly warmed to our task.

Stepping into the breach making their senior championship debuts were Keith Dempsey at number 15 who performed very well along with Kevin Ryan standing in for Padraic Kennedy in goals as was rock solid throughout. Emmet McEvoy at number7 and Sean Long also playing well and adding to the cause.

The game was a close affair for long periods with free takers accurate on both sides. Will Henn and Ronan Lynch obliging from placed balls.

By the half time break we edged into a two point lead having played some good hurling.

Just after the restart captain Will O Donoghue pounced on a loose ball and drove at the heart of the Balbec defense, causing mayhem before popping his handpass to the in rushing Conor Boylan to finish to the net via a deflection. 

This gap of three points remained for much of the half as both teams traded scores.

Substitute Adrian Breen made an instant impact contributing handsomely to the scoreline with the teams second goal after a long ball in.

It was David Dempsey who had the final say with a 3rd goal following another surging run.

It was great to see debuts for Gearoid Synnott also and have Shane Dowling back in the blue and white.

Overall a job well done with plenty of reflection in the weeks ahead. We next face Ballybrown in 2 weeks time.

INTERMEDIATE HURLERS

 

Our second string were also in action over the weekend when they travelled to Bruff on Sunday for round 1 of the Intermediate Hurling Championship.

They began the game a little under pressure losing three starters to the senior team.

That however is the joys of managing the second team as you prepare for championship.

Anyway to the game and our opponents were the Nickie Quaid led Effin team.

We began well and Joe Gleeson opening our account with a well struck point from just inside their half. His brother Pat then added our second.

The began was swaying over and back and by the 1st water break it was 0-7 to 0-5 in Effins favour.

The damage was done in the second quarter when the defence were caught sleeping allowing Effin in for their first goal.

This was swiftly followed by a second goal and by the half time it was 2-10 to 0-9.

The second half fight back never managed to eat into the Efiin lead and in spite of great endeavour it was our opponents who kept that gap at 7 points by the water break.

From there to the finish it was not to be for the lads who must now regroup for a tilt off Kilmallock to maintain their interest in this year's championship.

Overall the lads tried really hard but the concession of those second quarter goals proved a bridge too far.
