West Senior Football League Round 1

St. Kieran’s 0.05 Newcastlewest 1.12

The senior footballers got their 2021 campaign underway on Tuesday evening last when they made the short journey to Newcastlewest to take on the home side in a physically demanding encounter. In our first game in over nine months since victory over Galtee Gaels in the relegation play off a number of younger players got their first taste of senior football including Mike Shanahan, Sean Ryan, Eoin McEnery and Kevin Guina while Robert Bradley made his long-awaited return following a cruciate knee injury in November 2019. The first quarter was a close an tense affair as both sides went in at the water break tied at 0.3 apiece. We were dealt a major blow in the second quarter when we conceded a penalty and from here the home side began to assert their dominance on the game as we found it difficult to create scoring opportunities up front against the physically superior Newcastlewest side. As the second half progressed it began more difficult to break down the Newcastlewest defence despite putting together some good passages of play. At the final whistle there was ten points between the two sides and there will be plenty areas of improvement in the coming weeks. Next up in round two we play host to 2020 Intermediate County Finalists Gerard Griffins on Tuesday evening. The match report will be available in next weeks edition.

Limerick GAA:

Limerick senior footballers came up just short on Saturday last in their pursuit of promotion to Division 2 of the Allianz league against a hotly tipped Derry side who now advance to Division 2 in 2022 alongside Offaly, the only other side to defeat Limerick during the league campaign. Well done to Darragh Treacy who lined out at midfield once again putting in a very solid performance. Limerick now look forward to a home encounter with Waterford in ten days in the opening round of the Munster championship where the prize on offer is a Munster Semi Final berth against Cork. Elsewhere John Hayes and Dylan Moloney are currently part of the Limerick u20 panel, while Lorcan Murphy and Craig MacInnes have been selected for the Limerick Minor (u17) football panel.
