St. Kieran’s GAA

AGM 2019

The 2019 AGM will take place on Friday November 22 in Ardagh Hall at 8pm. We would encourage all club members and also any aspiring members who would like to contribute to club affairs to make a special effort to attend on the night as we discuss issues arising from the 2019 campaign.

County Premier U21 Football Championship:

St. Kieran’s 1.11 Fr. Casey’s 3.8

For the second week in succession there was a last-minute change of venue due to the inclement weather conditions we are experiencing at present with Tournafulla GAA club stepping up and providing the use of their pitch as Newcastlewest was deemed unplayable. Both sides went into the round two encounter having failed to win their round 1 encounters. We drew with Mungret, while Fr. Casey’s suffered a two-point defeat at the hands of Na Piarsaigh so both sides desperately needed a win if they had any aspirations of advancing to the knockout stages of the championship. It was the Abbeyfeale men, backboned by many players from their consecutive county minor championship successes who got the game’s opening score and began the game the brighter of the two sides. The opening ten minutes were hard hitting with players on both sides putting their bodies on the line in pursuit of possession. Once John Hayes got us off the mark there was very little between the two sides and we soon took the lead when Noel Callanan found the back of the net. Alas our lead was short-lived as Fr. Casey’s registered their opening goal to claw back their deficit. There was little to separate the teams in the opening half, the attitude of our players in defence was very pleasing, despite some dangerous moments early on our backs soon got to grips with their men and we began to take our chances up front. At the interval there was no separating the two sides and now playing with the assistance of the elements in the second period we were in a good position. We began the second period well securing possession in the middle third only to kick possession away aimlessly at times and against a side of the quality of Fr. Casey’s mistakes like this will be punished. The game took a major turn mid-way through the half when Fr. Casey’s capitalized on a moment of indecision on our part at the back to score their third goal of the game. From this point onwards we were chasing the game and while the players continued to put in an honest effort our decision making at times proved to be our downfall as we took the wrong options in front of goal and turned over possession in promising areas. At the final whistle there was a sense of disappointment at letting the game slip through our grasp. With two games remaining against Adare and Na Piarsaigh it is vital that we secure two wins, starting this Saturday afternoon against Adare if we are to advance from the group. We would also like to wish team captain, Robert Bradley a speedy recovery following a knee injury during the first half on Saturday.

Charity Road Hurling 2019:

This years Charity Road Hurling competition will take place on Friday December 27. Since its inception the event has gone from strength to strength and has proven to be one of the most eagerly anticipated days in our GAA calendar attracting competitors young and old from within and outside our parish. Once again the competition takes place around our traditional route in Ardagh, beginning at the bottom cross, working down the main road to Skehanagh Bridge which has ruined many a teams aspirations over the years before coming up by Cahermoyle House before the finishing stretch back into Ardagh.

Hurling for Fun:

Session 4 takes place this Friday evening at 8.30 in Ardagh Astroturf. There has been an extremely positive uptake in the event during the first three weeks and we hope to see many more in the coming weeks. The event is open to everyone regardless of your hurling ability. In order to cover the cost of the lights we would ask all participants to contribute €3.
