Mohill

Pakie McGarty RIP

The club extend sympathy to the wife and extended family of Mohill’s greatest footballer Pakie McGarty who died last week in Dublin. What more can we say about this great man that has not already been said by those who knew and played with him over the decades. Meeting him and his loving wife Ella at various club celebrations, my abiding memory is of a gentle humble man who was grateful for the great gift God gave him. The McGarty name is mentioned as far back as 1897 in our history and in the 40s and 50s their home in Treanmore acted as the Mohill clubroom with his father Dan multitasking as coach, Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer. Most of the family including Pakie were forced to emigrate but we came to know his siblings as they came home regularly in the summers long ago. His late brother Willie and his wife Peggy retired to Treanmore and he was Mohill’s most enthusiastic supporter for many happy years here, he was very proud of his brother’s achievements. Although we have yet to see Pakie’s equal, there are many cousins with his same DNA playing in Pairc Philib Mhic Aonghusa at present – Gordons, Murphys and others. Ní beidh a leitheád arís ann! Rest in Peace Pakie.

New Dressing Rooms

Exciting times ahead, everything is now in place and the building of our new dressing rooms will start in May, le cúnamh Dé. There is great enthusiasm from everyone in the parish and the Mohill diaspora all over the globe. Fundraising plans are being discussed at numerous Zoom meetings. The future looks bright and we will finally get the modern buildings that Mohill as a progressive and successful GAA club deserves.
