Former Laois senior and Kerry U20 football boss John Sugrue has been appointed manager of his adopted club, Park-Ratheniska.

The Kerry native replaces Kieran Kelly, who led Park-Ratheniska to back-to-back Laois JFC and IFC titles in 2020 and ’21 as well as a Division 2 League success this year. Sugrue managed the O’Moore County in 2018 and ’19, and the Kerry U20s in 2020. He also had a spell in charge of his native South Kerry.

“Known to many, John Sugrue, has been a huge part of our club for many years now and will relish the challenge of continuing the progress our Senior team has made in recent times. John has serious coaching credentials within the club already, having guided our U7's and U9's in recent seasons and we have no doubt that he will strive for the best across the club as a whole,” Park-Ratheniska said in a Facebook post.

“On the other side of this is that it is with sadness that our time with Kieran Kelly has come to an end. Kieran arrived to the club with a three-year plan and informed us after the O'Dempsey’s game that he would be sticking to that and stepping aside.

What a plan and what a three years we've had under Kieran’s stewardship; a Junior Championship in 2020, an Intermediate Championship in 2021 and a Division 2 League title in 2022, all done while playing a hugely attractive style of football.”
