Portarlington were crowned Laois senior football champions for the first time since 2001 at MW Hire O'Moore Park yesterday thanks to an emphatic 1-15 to 0-7 victory over Graiguecullen in the Covid-delayed 2020 county final.

In what was billed as the battle of the border towns, Martin Murphy's men produced a dominant performance to end their long wait for SFC honours. Graiguecullen only managed one point from play and were always fighting a losing battle after corner back Bobby Doyle was sin-binned in the sixth minute.

Ronan Coffey, Jack Foster, David Murphy, Jason Moore, Colm Murphy and Adam Ryan were all on target as Port' powered into a 0-10 to 0-3 half-time lead.

Jake Foster and Rioghan Murphy extended their advantage after the restart before wing back Stuart Mulpeter's 44th minute goal put the result beyond doubt.

Danny Bolger and Brian Byrne replied with a couple of frees for Graiguecullen, but they were mere consolation scores.
