Jack O'Connor's decision to step down as Kildare football manager has fuelled speculation that he may be about to make a sensational return to the Kerry hot-seat.

With a cloud of uncertainty hanging over Peter Keane's future as Kerry manager in the wake of last Saturday week's surprise All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Tyrone, O'Connor has been linked with a return to the Kingdom role for a third stint.

Kildare GAA has thanked O'Connor for his contribution over the past two seasons and said that that he will not be seeing out the final year of his three-year term due to “the personal impact of the commute from South Kerry”.

The three-time All-Ireland winning manager led the Lilywhites to promotion of the Division 1 of the Allianz League and to a Leinster final appearance against Dublin this year.
