Advanced mark will reward players like Connolly, says Ó Cinnéide

Kerry All-Ireland winner Dara Ó Cinnéide feels the advanced mark will eventually lead to more kicking and catching rather than sideways passing.

The advanced mark was one of three new gaelic football rules passed at Special Congress last weekend that will come into effect in 2020.

Speaking to the Irish Daily Star, Ó Cinnéide reckons the new rule will reward the Diarmuid Connollys of the game.

“I think I’m speaking for everybody who wants to see Diarmuid Connolly kicking a ball,” he said. “A good kick rewarded and not a sideways pass for the sake of safety. If the reward is there, it’s more likely you will have more kicks. I think that is what we want, that it has been defined public utterances (by the Standing Committee on Playing Rules).

“I don’t envisage it being, kicking high, diagonal into a towering Tommy Walsh. He soars above three or four men, catches it clean and wins a mark. It’s hard to avoid thinking without the Kerry cap on.

“I think it will suit forwards that will front their men. It’s a small bit of reward to them for making the effort to front their man and for the fella 50 yards away who wants to show his kicking skills.”
