Reigning All-Ireland champions Corofin returned to winning ways in the Galway SFC with a convincing opening round victory over Bearna.

Kevin O'Brien's side saw their remarkable 49-game unbeaten run in the county football senior championship and hopes of an eight-in-a-row of Frank Fox Cup titles sensationally ended by Mountbellew/Moylough at the semi-final stage twelve months ago.

It was a case of normal service being resumed at Tuam Stadium this evening as Dylan Canney's first-half goal gave Corofin the platform for a 1-12 to 0-7 win.

Having claimed a first-ever SFC crown last year, Moycullen had to pull out all the stops to overcome the challenge of Claregalway at Pearse Stadium, 2-13 to 1-15.

In the earlier throw-in in Salthill, goals proved decisive as Oughterard defeated Monivea-Abbey 2-10 to 0-13.

Meanwhile, Salthill-Knocknacarra's clash with Caherlistrane was postponed as a mark of respect.
