No shortage of contenders for vacant Galway hurling job

Davy Fitzgerald is among the early favourites to replace Shane O'Neill as Galway senior hurling manager.

The Sixmilebridge man was previously linked with the position in 2019 before it was filled by O'Neill. Fitzgerald recently ended his five-year involvement with Wexford and could be tempted to move on to Galway, which is only a short drive up the M18.

There is also speculation that 2017 Galway All-Ireland winning manager Micheál Donoghue will return to the role. Jeffrey Lynskey and Brian Hanley, who have delivered All-Ireland minor success to Galway in the recent past, are two other live contenders, with Hanley having already managed at senior level with Westmeath.

Current Dublin manager Mattie Kenny, ex-Dublin boss Anthony Daly, former Galway selectors Francis Forde and Noel Larkin, and Kevin Lally, who guided St Thomas' to a three-in-a-row of county titles, are also expected to be on the county board's shortlist.
