That said the League of Ireland are at the closing stages of a long campaign due to be completed in the coming days hopefully. In fairness they are not proposing to start a new competition in the middle of a lockdown. Even if the league of ireland season was due to start next week, would they go ahead with it or would they hold off until after level 5 lockdown??? I'd have my doubts..

Dont think winning a provincial title or AI will have the same feel after trudging through a waterlogged pitch with no spectators anyway...."

People need perspective here instead of panicking and creating panic. The GAA championships involved about 5, 000 people all in while hundreds of thousands of people go to factories and construction sites every day for 8 hours a day. Where's the biggest risk?

Replying To PoolSturgeon:  "I think Micheal Martin committed to it going ahead some weeks ago and that's the main reason it is going ahead. Perhaps if he had known a week ago the result of the RTE poll published today showing 67% against it going ahead, he would probably be of the same view as Varadkar. Unfortunately the celebrations after county finals around the country did lead to spread of the virus and has led to negative perceptions among the public as reflected in that opinion poll. On an optimistic note though I think celebrations of provincial/ all Ireland success can be and will be much tighter controlled than they were at club level. They will need to be because the whole country is watching and if they dont occur within the guidelines there will be very serious reputational damage done to the GAA. I understand the concern about amateur players going back into their communities but I think it is a lesser risk or concern than post match celebrations."
You would imagine as you say that club celebrations would be different to inter County ones but I think it could be worse. People are going to gather to watch games on TV & have a few drinks, say if Mayo win the football or Wexford won the hurling, its not exactly going to be a tea party celebration.
People need to start thinking outside of their bubble & outside the GAA bubble are companies that are not going to survive & go burst, people who will be long term unemployed, people who have died & where families have to decide who goes into the church & cemetery, people working on the front line who are exhausted from dealing with Covid cases, many people have had to deal with a multiple of the above. GAA people need to get their head down from their hole & think of others, especially those who suffered bereavements.
I agree with you re the reputational damage but I think that's already happened with the clusters from club celebrations, we have seen that locally in Galway .
Let's not forget that many of those involved at club celebrations nationwide were inter County players some of whom were certain professions, so if they couldn't control themselves then, its highly unlikely they will after winning an All Ireland. The GAA membership & supporters are now directly responsible for large clusters nationwide & one of the reasons we are heading to Level 5, so reputational damage is already done.
Interesting that there isn't a peep from John Horan, now that they got €20 Million from Govt, they are going to plough on with things regardless.
Interesting also that the only ones you see in the media driving it are the Kerry, Mayo & Meath bucks who have vested interests through their print media & TV sidelines. These guys have no more interest in mental health that they keep espousing, its all about the dineros.

There we go again. How would Professional soccer keep a person entertained? Heats still in ground so better to watch grass grow.

NPHET said the Championships can go ahead and I'd rather listen to them instead of some sore Galway fan who just watched their team get battered by Mayo.

You can believe that the Championship should not go ahead and believe that unsafe factories and construction sites, and direct provision centres should not be open at the same time.

If the Government cannot close unsafe meat factories, that is down to their own ineptitude, but it doesn't change the fact that most people in the country are of the opinion that Championship should not go ahead. There are legitimate concerns being raised, and the GAA have not been able to comprehensively put these concerns to bed. Instead they've gone quiet, and let the GAA pundits make the case for them.

I think the captain of the Louth team outlined it quite well. His team have jobs, they have elderly people relying on their care, they have high-risk people living with them. Some work in schools, some work in hospitals. He expected there to be testing, especially in light of recent case numbers. There has been no testing.

It's worrying, it's dangerous, and personally I do not trust the GAA as an organisation to address this effectively.

There we go again what?? Think you jumped the gun there a bit. Sure I dont find soccer entertaining but soccer fans do and if "The League of Ireland would have to stop as a lot of players are only semi pro" as a poster suggested, "there is plenty of pro soccer on tv to keep those people entertained"...
Plenty of heat still in the ground up in Tyrone??

GAA will be no risk whatsoever. Just after watching news and the sports showed two soccer matches from tonight. No masks on manager and staff, and then hugging opposing managers after game. Some difference in that and the professional code we witnessed with all GAA managers at weekend.

Good lad Rolo, how you equate my point with Mayo deservedly beating Galway is anyone's guess.

You'd need to be able to understand the game first.... You should get better bait when you try and go fishing online. Amateur attempts.

Not hard to understand, most goals win. More back passes than a Tyrone match.

I'm sure moc.dna won't mind me correcting you there, he has made it clear before on here he only goes to Connacht rugby games and would never give a cent to the GAA so I doubt last Sundays result is affecting his thinking much on this.

Mightn't know much but I know come 3-45 on Sunday we're down. Mayo will be too good for us.

You never know. Should be a good match. Maybe you're reading too hard into their beating of Galway. It's hard to duplicate such a great performance.

Nobody knows that's sport and that why we all love it...Mayo weren't given a prayer by most against Galway and look what happened. I'd take a hard fought 1 point win over Tyrone right now.

With all the GAA games televised, some Saturday and Sunday with nothing else to do I think all GAA people will be watching at home. The media will have moved beyond the blame game for the start of it, found a new villain and everyone will be happy that the games are on.

You must be joking! The Belfast Telegraph and the Newsletter will only be sharpening their pencils at that stage in preparation for the first slip up made by the GAA. They'll make plenty of hay and I cant see the Southern media turning their back on a similar opportunity.

Yes that is true, The Bel Tel and Nolan will relish any problems with the GAA competitions.
