Getting the ball between the posts is a good method.

As Patrique said ,whatever way the player takin' 'em is comfortable with. Which got me thinking, should kick outs and 45s be made optional like frees are.
Kick from the hand or on the ground, Any views lads.

great topic to debate Bogman and a difficult question to answer. since players were first allowed to take a free from the hands it sort of done away with teams carrying maybe an average player/but a very accurate place kicker type forward if you know what i mean without naming names, i suppose different players have different techniqies and each to their own i guess, but for me Peter Canavan was a standout player who was deadly either from his hands or off the ground.. but then again Peter the Great was unique he had it all

has to be off the ground.kicking from the hand means you are kicking a moving ball which must be harder.

Put it on the ground and boot it over the bar !! There are too many things moving at the same time with the kick from the hands !!

Me personally, off the hands, i find it difficult to get height and distance kicking from the ground, but I'm not a free taker, thank god you can take line balls from the hands now, not like in the old days.
But, it all depends on the individual, if your Padraig Joyce, take from the hands, but if your Trevor Giles, Mark Vaughan or Maurice Sheridan, then drive it from the ground.

But, I have heard a lot of top players say that, for accuracy, its best kicking from the ground.

It depends 100% on the kicker but in my opinion off the ground is the best option. One thing we have been missing in Sligo for many years now is a player who can hit a decent free off the floor. If the kicker is decent enough the shot will always be accurate, but a lot of times you see the power lacking. Trevor Giles was an expert. I also saw a player from Louth, think his name was White, playing in the O'Byrne Cup Final against DCU and he never missed one free off the ground the whloe game and he hit more than one from well behind the 45

As a free taker i find off the ground much easier, time and time again at club level players miss soft frees wen taking dem off the hands. Bryan Sheehan of Kerry is the player i most admire for his free taking he makes look effortless to kick a ball from the ground 45metres out but with everything its how u feel urself and above all it's PRACTICE at the end of the day.

With regard to free kicks in particular the power and distance achieved by the kicker . It was and is claimed that certain kickers would in fact strap their kicking foot in some fasion similar to what a boxer would do to his hands before putting on the gloves. This method apparently was and is the secret to power and distance, the accuracy however was and is down to the actual individual.

Well, if you're taking a free from the ground, the ball is not moving when you kick it. Sounds like common sense that this would be a better way to go than kicking a moving ball which is what you're doing if you take a free from the hands.

Distance isnt really about power either. Its simply the pendulum effect. Whether you're kicking from the ground or the hands.

From the hands seems more popular as the laws allow you to steal a few extra yards.

Power most certainly is a contributory factor to distance achieved. Your theory is not correct, by me saying this however,it should not be construed as undermining the views of somebody from the most successful footballing county in the country.
