Championship Reform?

(Oldest Posts First)

Should the championship be reformed along the lines of the ladies game (Senior/Inter/Junior) with 12 teams in each? Promotion / Relegation. Do away with provincials or place them at start of year. I think the provinces are a waste of time except Ulster. In an evenly balanced competition everyone plays at same time, so it's balanced. A lot of football this year hasn't been balanced until semi-finals and Tailteann cup because that's when everyone evened out

Next year's football championship is 'reformed', I see.

Includes a round robin for 4 groups of 4 teams, qualifying a ridiculous 12 of the 16 participants for the 'playoffs' ( preliminary qfinals *8 & qfinals *4). That's 24 matches to eliminate FOUR teams.

Fuel prices are a bit hefty right imo, to be watching such a soft 'non cutting edge' format.

Run Provincials, before and separate from All Ireland Championship. Then open draw Tailteann and All Ireland. Knockout champiinship, lose and go home games of football.

Will teams be seeded? I presume the provincial champions will be top seeds in each of the 4 groups. Likewise the winners of each group will go straight to Q finals - I presume they will be kept apart and can't be drawn against each other in the Q finals?

The matter is done and dusted Leitrim. There's a new structure in place for the next three years. Hammerings are part of sport. In this year's hurling championships there were 28 games which resulted in beatings of 15 points or more. Did you see the semi final between Kilkenny and Clare?

I'm sure it'll be seeded alright.

Playing a whopping 24 matches to eliminate 4 (likely lower div2) outfits is a chaff blowing exercise imo, but 'patrons' will be asked to buy tickets for these 3 games, and 4 games if you 'qualify' for a prelim q-final. It looks like a money grab, because the 'quality depth' is not there to pique any serious interest in what 12 teams emerge from the top 16.

It replaces 'the backdoor' with a 'revolving door' in some ways, and could increase gate receipts, if people don't see it for what it is............which is 24 games to eliminate 4 sides, who probably won't rank in the top 8, and possibly won't even rank in the top12 either. That's a whole lot of games, with sfa ride'n on them.

If the GAA are sensible, they will insert a rule that round 1 winners play each other in round 3. This way, a group cannot be won until round 3. A team cannot be eliminated until round 3 either.
At worst, two teams on 4 points play to win a quarter-final spot and two teams on 0 points play to win a preliminary quarter-final spot.
